You may find it confusing since you still not get into it. First step of the maintenance process should be regularly testing the water. Daily testing is required when it is summer, but once a week is enough when it comes to the winter times.

Some chemicals which work well for your swimming pool are Chlorine and Cyanuric Acid. Chlorine will sanitize the water as well as kill bacteria and prevent the growth of algae. Cyanuric Acid will stabilize the molecule of Chlorine. That way you will not need to frequently adding Chlorine to the swimming pool when you add the Cyanuric Acid at the same time.
