We may take them for granted but drapes and curtains have a major effect on the quality of our interior designs. Deserving of their fair share of attention from a design standpoint, over the years, choices for curtains and drapes have changed, and it is important to know what has been, what is, and what will be.

In the past, designs for curtains and drapes were very simple, often consisting of a heavy, plain cloth which was mostly meant to keep drafts out. As fabrics slowly became more readily available and more affordable, the possibility of designed curtains became endless.

Popular style evolves all the time, and the patterns and colors popular even just a few years ago may no longer be in vogue today. Today, our access to eclectic design influences and components means that our curtains need to match a wide range of tastes. The general rule is that the more influences you have in the design of a room, the simpler your curtains and drapes tend to be.

Material has a lot to do with the look and feel of the curtain, as well as its function. Many bedroom design ideas include satiny or silky curtains which can block drafts and light – which also implies privacy for whatever you may be doing in there. On the other hand, living room design ideas may include lighter, airier curtains, which are fine for achieving more open and welcoming designs.

Another factor that influences curtains and drapes and in turn is influenced by said design features is the location. Whether you are applying a design on a location, or applying a location’s style to a design, curtains and drapes will have a lot of impact. To illustrate, many New York interior designers will choose drapes with more neutral patterns and colors, which will appeal to a larger range of persons from different cultural backgrounds.

Heavier curtains to block drafts can also be found. On the flip side, Los Angeles interior designers may choose curtains made of lighter fabrics in order to take advantage of California’s constant sunny days and breezes. Additionally, LA has a more open and unpretentious feel (except for Hollywood), whereas NYC looks more urbane yet private. You can achieve those stylistic concepts by using the right kinds of drapes and curtains.
