Making Construction Green

This item was filled under [ Constructions ]

Throughout the world today, we are told to consume less. The mantra of the green movement has been to reduce, reuse, recycling. This environmentally responsible approach is being accepted by people and businesses as the way of the future. What may surprise people is that although the construction industry attempts to become greener. They are looking at products that will not only save energy in the future, but there will be environmentally friendly during the construction process.

A good example of building going green is the increased use of insulated concrete forms (ICFs). This design is one of the most green building techniques available to developers. When developed properly, the foam forms are made of nearly all recycled materials. They are sent to the exact amount requested, and they quickly locked in place. In other words, the environment has helped, because recycled materials, less waste is generated at the construction site, and less energy and time are used to build a building that’s walls.

The walls are constructed, is obviously green. By using the ICF concrete construction contractor uses less wood. The reason is that walls are no longer made of wood studs. Instead, concrete walls are sealed in the foam. The less wood used in home construction means more trees will be back in the woods. Most people who think green agree to save a tree is a good way to help the environment.

Start Building a Home in the Winter ??

This item was filled under [ Constructions, Home Building ]

I read a book the other day called”Tips and Traps When taking your home and the author suggested that building a home in winter is great, because you can usually get the job done cheaper, because most contractors can’t find work during this season.

Obviously this only affects people who live in areas where it snows or rains in winter. If you live in a desert climate, contractors usually work all year round and it does not affect their pricing. If you find a contractor who wants to work in snow and rain, during the winter and they’re’ll give you a low ball estimate, be careful.

This would be a clear sign that the contractor does not’t really understand the implications of building a home in frozen or expansive soil or weather conditions on construction materials. Don’t believe everything that’s writing, including information I’m giving in this article. Do your own research and find out for yourself, that’s telling the truth and who doesn’t really know what they’re talking about.

For the building foundation is completed, the house hit, is on the roof and exterior is wrapped up and ready, so go ahead and work at home in winter. This is what most entrepreneurs do not they’t start building a foundation or frame a home in the winter, unless they’have nothing better to do and intend to waste much time.

Installing Windows in New Construction

This item was filled under [ Constructions ]

Installing a window in a freshly framed opening is one of the more simple tasks in a construction project.

Most new construction windows have what is called a nailing fin. These are found on vinyl or aluminum clad windows. This nailing fin is either vinyl or metal and has nail holes every 4 to 6 inches and about 1 and 1/2 inches wide. Nailing fins take the place of brick moulding which can still be found on primed wooden windows.

Not only do these fins make installation easier, but also make a better seal against water and air infiltration. These windows can be flashed if desired but not deemed necessary. A window that does not have the benefit of a soffit or porch roof above it may need flashing or a drip edge above it.

When getting ready to install a window, make sure the sheathing is not hanging into the rough opening. This could cut down the size of the opening and not let the window go into the opening. Once this is done, measure the rough opening to make sure the it is big enough for the window. You don’t want to lift a heavy window to an opening only to find it won’t fit. Rough openings are usually 1″ wider and 1/2″ taller than the window unit. Rough openings are spect and provided by the window manufacturer.

Depending on the size of the window, you’ll need 2 or 3 people to install a window. One or two outside and one inside.
